Movie Screening – ‘Better Call Saul’ (Disciplinary Hearing)

Legal Ethics Chair organized the second movie session on January 30th at New Vision University administrative campus for students, lawyers and other interested parties. A disciplinary hearing and lawyer’s interview with the ethics commission from ‘Better Call Saul’ (season 3, episode 5; season 4, episode 9) was shown during the session. The movie is about the criminal lawyer James McGill who transforms into his alter ego Saul Goodman during the series - a morally challenged lawyer. The episode was about disciplinary proceedings against Mr. McGill and whole trial was shown including opening statements of the parties, examination of witnesses, showing exhibits etc.

After the movie session Legal Ethics Co-chair Mrs. Ana Loria held the discussion on attorney disciplinary proceedings in USA and in Georgia, comparative approach. Students were actively involved in the discussion and drew parallels between these two approaches.

Round Table Discussion on Legal Ethics at Batumi Shota Rustaveli State University

On January 22nd, 2020, New Vision University legal ethics chair, together with Batumi Shota Rustaveli State University organized a round table on ‘Confidentiality and Privilege’. Mrs. Ana Loria, New Vision University Legal Ethics Co-chair and the Member of the Georgian Bar Association Ethics Commission, lead the discussion. The round table was on the definition of confidentiality and a privilege, legislative gaps and the scope of privilege. Mrs. Loria discussed related regulations and case law in Georgia, as well as in Europe, the UK, and the United States.

Practitioner lawyers and law professors participated in the round table. They were actively engaged in discussion and shared their experience with the audience towards the abovementioned issues. They hoped there will be such kind of discussions held in future too and underlined the importance of ethical obligations in legal profession.

The Legal Ethics Chair of the University is pleased to announce a competition to select scholarly articles on legal professional ethics.

The article should be related to: the ongoing challenges in the field of professional legal ethics, or an analysis of a case opinion of the Georgian Bar Association Legal Ethics Commission and/or the Supreme Court Disciplinary Chamber.

Selected articles will be published on the website of the New Vision University Legal Ethics Chair. The competition is open for professors, practitioner lawyers, attorneys, LLB and LLM students.

This Project is supported by the USAID Promoting Rule of Law in Georgia Program, implemented by the East West Management Institute in Georgia.

Deadline for submission of the articles: March 5th, 2020.

National Moot Court Competition on Legal Ethics
National Moot Court Competition on Legal Ethics

New Vision University hosted the final round of  National Moot Court Competition on Legal Ethics on December 1st. Students from New Vision University, University of Georgia, Tbilisi State University and Sulkhan-Saba Orbeliani University took part in the competition.

Preliminary rounds of the competition were held between 8 groups and all participating teams presented their positions on Ethics Commission Moot Hearing. Four teams that obtained higher scores on preliminary rounds succeeded to the Finals.  Participating teams were assessed by the invited expert-judges who have outstanding competence and experience in legal ethics. To guarantee a fair and impartial assessment the names of the universities of the participating teams were unknown to the judges.

Organizing team decided not to identify the winner and runner-up teams and all four finalists were granted with the Certificates of Achievement. This attitude towards the Moot Competition rules is an innovation in Georgia and reflects the concept of the university which supports the popularization of the idea of participation in moot court competitions with educational purposes.

Public Lecture on – ‘The Role of Attorney and Importance of Ethics in Legal Profession’

On November 25, 2019 the New Vision University together with the Batumi Shota Rustaveli State University are organizing a public lecture on ‘the Role of Attorney and Importance of Ethics in Legal Profession’. Mrs. Ana Loria, New Vision University Legal Ethics Co-chair and the Member of the Georgian Bar Association Ethics Commission will lead the lecture.

Law Students, legal practitioners and other interested parties can attend the lecture.

Public lecture will be held on November 25, at 2:00 pm at Batumi Shota Rustaveli State University.

On October 24, 2019, New Vision University hosted the presentation of journal Georgian Law Review.

The publication combines articles and research created through New Vision University Legal Ethics Chair and it addresses current issues in legal ethics. In the journal you will find papers written by practicing lawyers as well as law students.

National Moot Court Competition on Legal Ethics

National Moot Court Competition on Legal Ethics will take place on November 29-30 and December 1st, 2019. Legal Ethics Chair will give one-day preparation training to participating teams before the competition – on November 29, 2019. Ten teams will be chosen for the competition - eight teams from Tbilisi and two teams from the regions. Law faculty students of bachelor and master level can participate in competition. Participating teams will represent their positions during the moot court competition. Teams will be assessed by invited judges. Judges will be selected from the legal ethics experts and practitioner lawyers.

On September 23rd, the New Vision University Legal Ethics Chair conducted a meeting for law professors and attorneys from around the country to assist in the implementation of an Ethics Course at the Masters in Law level and to finalize the components of the course and syllabus.                                    

The course will cover legal ethics and consist of lectures, individual and group exercises, case-based learning and role-plays. The syllabus for Masters in Law is focused on comparative analysis of domestic and international law and professional legal ethics practice.  Local, as well as foreign experts were involved in the drafting process.

The New Vision University Legal Ethics Chair established a working group that included past and present members of the Georgian Ethics Commission, legal practitioners, and local and international experts. The group developed a course on Legal Ethics for LLM students with the support of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) within the framework of East-West Management Institute’s (EWMI) project Promoting Rule of Law in Georgia (PROLoG).

The productive workshop was attended by dozens of law school professors and lawyers from national and state agencies.

The group developed a course on Lawyers’ Legal Ethics for LLM students with the support of United States Agency for International Development (USAID) within the framework of East-West Management Institute’s (EWMI) project Promoting Rule of Law in Georgia (PROLoG).

The course covers the ethical issues and guidlines for attorneys’. The course consists of lectures, individual and group exercises, case-based learning and role-plays. The syllabus for LLM students is focused on comparative analysis of domestic and  international law and practice in the professional ethics for lawyers.

On September 23th, 2019, from 6:30pm to 9:00pm, the legal ethics chair organizes a meeting for professors from various universities around the country to assist in the implementation of the Ethics Course at master’s level and to share finalized syllabus.

Professors are invited to take part in the meeting held on 23 September at New Vision University. Recommendations of attending professors regarding syllabus content and teaching materials will be incorporated  in the final product.
